The next six weeks will be critical as the pro-euthanasia lobby yet again attempt to legalize 'assisted dying'. The time to act is now:
Coroners and Justice Bill in Lords - 18 May
Our website reports on the recent unsuccessful attempt in the Commons by Patricia Hewitt to hi-jack this bill to introduce an amendment allowing assisted suicide. With no government support, that amendment was never reached, but the Lords will first debate the Bill today. The danger time will be in committee and at report stage in the following weeks. Please write to at least one Peer asking them to oppose any amendments allowing assisted suicide. All the information you will need, along with background on the bill, points to make and contact details, are available on the CNK website.
22 May - deadline for nurse responses to RCN re assisting suicide
The RCN have a video link explaining their consultation in a four minute presentation and are proposing to issue guidance for nurses on assisting suicide. CNK raises two key questions about this proposed guidance. Please encourage any nurses you know to respond to this consultation. All the resources nursing colleagues will need are on the CNK website.
'Dr Death' does his rounds
Controversial Australian Philip Nitschke was demonstrating his suicide workshop in the UK recently. CNK took part in a variety of media interviews. Nitschke got so angry in one media interview, he put the phone down on Peter Saunders.
Debbie Purdy appeal in Lords - 2 June
Debbie Purdy continues to campaign to 'clarify' the law on assisting suicide. The Court of Appeal said although prosecution of a relative accompanying her to Dignitas was unlikely, they would not rule for an explanatory policy. She continues to challenge this judgment
Margo MacDonald will get assisted dying debated
Margo MacDonald, the pro-euthanasia MSP, is said now to have the backing of 21 others. Perhaps some will change their minds when they see her actual Bill?
