Kim Leadbeater's Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill passed its Commons Second Reading in November 2024 with a majority of 55, shrinking to 23 at Third Reading in June 2025, before falling in the Lords (where expert evidence pointed to a raft of weaknesses) when the session ended. The Bill was revived by Lauren Edwards MP―deliberately unimproved to allow for use of the Parliament Acts to force the Bill through―and was defeated 286-270 at Second Reading on 11 September 2026.
After almost five years of consultation, campaigning and debate, MSPs rejected Liam McArthur's Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill at Stage 3 on 17 March 2026, voting 69-57. The 7 May elections saw significant changes to the make-up of the Scottish Parliament.
