Church of Scotland General Assembly rejects neutrality

ASSISTED SUICIDE: CAMPAIGNERS WELCOME KIRK DECISION TO VOTE AGAINST BILL

The Kirk’s decision was welcomed by Dr Gordon Macdonald, CEO of Care Not Killing, which leads the campaign against assisted suicide. He said:

“Supporters of the Bill have been speaking expectantly about securing the Church of Scotland’s support for their proposals. This will be a massive blow to their hopes and shows the increasing breadth of opposition to proposed legislation which would effectively result in state-sponsored killing.

“There is a long way to go on this Bill and the Kirk’s decision – voted through by a majority of 4 – will be seen in time as marking the start of a fightback against assisted suicide which at Stage 1 only had a majority of 14.”

“With the Royal College of General Practitioners stating that Liam McArthur’s Bill is not ‘fit for purpose’ and up to 21 MSPs who voted for the Bill last week at Stage 1 expressing doubts about it, it is evident that the more people realise what the Bill will entail the more likely they are to oppose it. Indeed 69 percent of Scots oppose assisted dying when they consider 10 arguments against it according to recent polling conducted by Whitestone Insight on behalf of Care Not Killing.”
